How much do tattoos cost?
I cost my time out at 2000 baht an hour... losely... I am not the worlds fastest tattoo artist and will often spend more time on a piece of work for my own satisfaction rather than for the hourly rate. Usually how I work my prices is to look at the art involved and agree with the customer how many hours we should take, if we are inside our estimate then the client pays the hourly rate, if we go over, well too bad for me. I find this method of working takes all the pressure off both myself and the client and allows us to do the best tattoo we can.
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
Yes it does, plain and simple. Many things effect the reasons why you will experience pain during a tattoo, I have even read that caffienne effects the nerve endings and makes them more sensitive, so I now advise my clients to back off the caffienne before their booking. I can only really speak from my own experience, the best sittings I have had have been approached fit, rested, fed, hydrated and basically healthy. On the occasions I have sat with a hangover I have hated every minute of it. Take a common sense approach, an i-pod, some gum, dont bring half a dozen of your mates or plan to be on the phone every five mins, your mates will get bored and go and the phone interupts the tattoo, something to read would be better! Basically something to take your mind off it. Depending on what part of the body you get tattooed will also effect the level of pain, for example I really try and talk first timers out of the rib cage, the two who insisted both have outline only, for certain areas of the body you have to be "dedecated". Then other body partys are real easy and you will be able to sit for hours, the most important factor is to approach a tattoo with very real expectations, there is nothing wrong with working in sittings to "manage" the pain, if your working with a skilled tattoo artist he will appreciatte your honesty and concerns, discuss your work first.... get it right in your head and you will have no problems.
Can I take pain killers, drink alcohol or use a numbing cream or pain killing injection?
Not if you want a tattoo from me. Pain killers thin the blood and you will bleed more, some clients have tried them and have reported that they don't help. No alcohol in my studio unless it's the Christmas party, tattooing people who are drunk is not my idea of fun, being drunk does not help you manage the pain. I have used 'emla' cream once, I don't know what it did to the skin but I didn't get the ink in how I wanted to and the customer had to have it re-freshed without numbing cream, which incidently he though was a better experience. The only needles we offer are tattoo needles, a pain killing injection would require a doctor and if you are prepared to go to that length then re think your tattoo. Trust your tattooist he or she will get you through it.
